(Market Segmentation)

(Meaning and Definitions of Market Segmentation)

(Objectives of Market Segmentation)

(Bases for Market Segmentation)

(Market Strategies towards Market Segmentation)

(Undifferentiated Marketing Strategy),
(Differentiated Marketing Strategy),

Market Segmentation

MEANING OF MARKET SEGMENTATION

The concept of market segmentation is based on the assumption that total market for most of the products is not homogeneous but too much heterogeneous. This is so because people have different needs and values. Therefore, a marketer can not serve all customers in a broad market.

For Example: There may be a total market for textiles, electrical appliances, cosmetics, washing machines etc. but within the total for each of these products, there might exist many markets which differ vitally from each other. Under textile sub- markets, there might be demand for cotton cloth in one sector of population, in other for silk, yet in other for synthetic fibre textiles. This is so because two customers of a product are never common but they differ in their nature, qualities, taste, fashion, preference, buying habits or motives for buying. Thus, on the basis of these characteristics, customers having similar qualities and characteristics are grouped in segments. The characteristics of customers of one segment differ with those of other segments. The marketers may take the advantage of situation and divide the total market into smaller groups of consumers i.e., segments on the basis of significant difference in buyer characteristics. In a sense market segmentation is a strategy of ‘divide and conquer’ i.e., dividing the market in order to conquer them. Thus, market segmentation is the process of dividing a potential market into distinct submarkets of buyers with homogeneous needs and characteristics. It is to identify the groups of buyers on the basis of differences in their desires and requirements.

ASSUMPTIONS OF MARKET SEGMENTATION PROCESS

(i) Markets are heterogeneous.
(ii) Different market segments respond differently.
(iii) Market segmentation is consistent with the marketing concept.

DEFINITIONS OF MARKET SEGMENTATION

“Market segmentation is the strategy of dividing markets in order to conquer them.”

-Alan. A. Robert

“Market segmentation consists of taking the total heterogeneous market for a product and dividing it into several submarkets or segments, each of which tends to be homogeneous in all significant aspect.”

-William J. Stanton

OBJECTIVES/PURPOSE OF MARKET SEGMENTATION

In short, the main objectives of market segmentation are as follows:
1. Grouping customers on the basis of their homogeneous characteristics such as taste, habits, nature, qualities, needs, behaviour, sex etc..
2. To design different marketing programme for each consumer group according to their nature.
3. To achieve market targets..
4. To develop new products according to consumers’ needs.
5. To expand the market and satisfy the consumers.
6. To make the activities of the firm customer-oriented.
7. To determine marketing strategies, targets and goals.

CRIETERIA, BASES OR FACTORS FOR MARKET SEGMENTATION

There are many ways to group customers in segmenting the market. Broadly speaking there are two main approaches to identify market segments:

(I) PEOPLE ORIENTED APPROACH/CUSTOMER’S PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS APPROACH

Under this, those characteristics or variables are considered which are independent of any product or service. It is tried to find out the type of customer ‘ who’ will buy the product. Various characteristics for classification of customers are:

(1) Geographic Segmentation: Geographic location is the usual and popular basis for market segmentation. For planning and administrative purposes the marketer will often find it convenient to subdivide the country into areas in systematic way. Geographic segmentation may be on the basis of state, region, density of area, size of city and climate etc. In short, Geographic segmentation can take place as follows:

(i) Region: North, South, East, West, Central.
(ii) Climate: Hot, Cold, Rainy, Humid.
(iii) City Size: Towns, small cities, metropolitan.
(iv) Density of Area: Rural, semi-urban, urban.

The marketer may design the marketing strategies taking into consideration the characteristics of individual markets.

(2) Demographic Segmentation: Demography is the study of population. Under this, market segments are defined according to demographic factors such as age, sex, marital status, number and age of children.
For Example: Markets may be segmented on the basis of sex i.e. ladies and gents. Lipstick is meant for women whereas shaving cream is meant for gents.

Demographic factors are easier to recognise and measure. Moreover these can be easily co-related with sales and other marketing data. Various bases of demographic segmentation are:

(i) Age Group: Children, teenagers, adults, grownups.
(ii) Sex: Male, female.
(iii) Marital Status: Married, unmarried.
(iv) Family Life Cycle: Young, single, young married, no child, married with one child.
(v) Family Size: One, two to three, four, five and above.

(3) Socio-Economic Segmentation: Under this, segmentation is done on the basis of socio-economic characteristics like income, education, occupation, social class, religion, culture. Socio-economic factors especially when used together, can help to locate a market precisely.

This method is widely used because it not only helps in locating segments but also in measuring the size of segment easily. Various basis are:

(i) Religion: Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh.
(ii) Nationality: Indians, Chinese, Americans.
(iii) Occupation: Professional, business, clerical.
(iv) Income: High income, middle income, lower income.
(v) Education: Primary, secondary, senior secondary. college, university.

(4) Psychographic Segmentation: In the psychographic base, population differences in terms of personality, life styles, self images form the basis of population clustering. Various basis are:

(i) Life Style: Conservative, liberal, adventurous.
Example: Some customers prefer latest products, some like antiques, rare products.

(ii) Social Class: Products demanded by the groups are: Upper Class Prestigious goods like diamond, AC, luxury cars.
Middle Class: Cooler, T.V., scooter. Lower Class: Necessity goods like cycle.

(II) CUSTOMER RESPONSE (PRODUCT ORIENTED APPROACH) SEGMENTATION

Under this type of segmentation, customer response or buyer behaviour is considered related to product benefits, product usage, brand loyalty and store patronage. It is tried to find out why customers buy a certain product. The various bases of segmentation reflecting buyer behaviour are:

(1) Benefits Pattern: Consumers expect benefits from the product. Benefits sought by consumers are the basic reason for the existence of market segment. Customer satisfaction directly depends upon product benefits. Example: Taste, flavour, cost, quality, repairs, style, performance etc. First consumers are grouped on the basis of benefits they expect and then each segment is analysed on the basis of demographic, socio-economic characteris tics leading to appropriate marketing mix for each segment.

(2) Use Pattern: The use of the total consumption of a family unit for a given product may act as a basis of segmentation. There are light users, medium users and heavy users. Marketers always try to influence heavy users. One more group can also be framed of non-users. Marketers try to create interest of these users in their offerings.

(3) Brand/Store Loyalty: Segmentation on the basis of loyalty enables a marketer to tailor the marketing policy and product appeal so as to retain the loyal customers, to attract new consumers from rival brand and to convert non-loyal into loyal buyers. However brand loyalty is not easy to measure.

ALTERNATIVE MARKETING STRATEGIES TOWARDS MARKET SEGMENTS

(i) Undifferentiated Marketing Strategy Under: undifferentiated marketing strategy, there is only one marketing mix or product for the whole market as well as customers. There is neither grouping of customers nor market segmentation. The strategy lays emphasis on one product and formulates only one marketing programme.
Example: For many years the reputed Coca Cola company followed such a strategy-one brand, one product, one bottle for one big market but later on due to competition given by rivals it had to adopt differential marketing.

Features: 1. One target market, 2. Narrow product line, 3. One marketing mix for the target market, 4. One marketing program, 5. Preference to common needs of customers.

Merits: 1. Large scale production, 2. Cost economies, 3. Maximum profits, 4. Reduced market research expenses, 5. Increase in goodwill of the firm, 6. Common advertising programme.

Demerits: 1. Profits in short run only, 2. Product oriented strategy, 3. Ignores various needs of customers.
(2) Differentiated Marketing StrategyL Under this, grouping of customers is done on the basis of their common characteristics. It differentiates among the groups on the basis of their age, sex, religion, educational level, income, taste, caste, family size etc.

Example: Maruti Udyog Ltd. that tries to produce car for every ‘purse-purpose and personality’. Hindustan Lever has one brand of bath soap for each market segment.
Features: 1. Various market segments, 2. Large product line, 3. Product variety to customers, 4. Different marketing programmes, 5. Different marketing mix for each segment.

Merits: 1. Higher sales and higher customer satisfaction, 2. Firm can develop brand preference and repeat sales, 3. Customer oriented strategy, 4. More suitable to common usage products.
Demerits: 1. Higher production and higher marketing cost, 2. Difficult to implement due to limited firm’s resources, 3. Additional sales increase may be lower than additional cost increase i.e. stage of diminishing returns.

(3) Concentrated Marketing Strategy: Under this strategy, the marketer focusses on certain areas of market. It follows ‘one product-one segment’ strategy. In the words of Philip Kotler, “Instead of going after a small share of a large market, the firm goes after a large of one or few submarkets. But another way instead of spreading itself this is many parts of the market, it concentrates its forces to gain a good market position in a few areas. “The firm selects a market area where there is no strong competition and it can do best in that area. If it succeeds in matching its resources with customer demand, it may enjoy an element of monopoly in that area.

Example: ‘ Rolex’ watch co. concentrated only on costly, quality and high priced watches. A publishing house may concentrate only on text books say on accounts, economics. Johnson & Johnson produces baby products.
