(Marketing Mix)

(Meaning and Definition of Marketing Mix)

(Factors/Forces Affecting Marketing Mix)

I, अनियन्त्रणीय तत्त्व,

I, अनियन्त्रणीय तत्त्व (Uncontrollable Factors)

(Controllable Factors)

Marketing Mix

Meaning: Marketing Mix’ is a term generally used to denote a particular combination of marketing variables which are controllable by an enterprise and which are used to appeal to a particular market segment. It was James Culliton, the American Marketing Expert who in 1948, described the marketing manager Mixer of Ingredients’. Later on Neil-H. Borden coined the as a ‘ phrase Marketing Mix’. In order to satisfy the needs of its customers, a business firm must determine a marketing mix. Marketing Mix refers to strategic policies adopted by a firm in placing its product in the market. It is a combination of several mixes such as product mix, price mix, place mix and promotion mix. All the four components are important and are interrelated. Prof Mc. Carthy refers to these elements as four P’s viz. product decisions, price decisions, promotion decisions and placement decisions. The best combination of all marketing channels leads to success in the market.

Forces Affecting Marketing Mix: Marketing process of a firm is influenced by two of factors. They are: (I) Uncontrollable Factors, (II) Controllable factors.

(I) Uncontrollable/Market/External Factors: These are the factors on which the company has no control but they affect the marketing activities of the company. They are:

(1) Consumer Behaviour : Consumer is a social being. The behaviour of a consumer affects the demand of a product. The marketing manager should study the needs, desires and preferences of the customers and also analyse their effects on the demand of the product. Consumer behaviour is determined by cultural, social, personal factors etc. As these factors change, marketing mix will automatically change.

(2) Government Policy: The functioning of the business is influenced by the government through fiscal policies, economic controls, industrial regulations etc. Government intervention regarding price, quality, distribution system and packing of the products is common. Therefore, marketing mix should be according to these laws.

(3) Pattern of Distribution: Choice of a channel of distribution depends on a number of factors. While preparing marketing mix, the marketing manager should consider the forms of distribution system and also take into account market, product and middlemen considerations etc.

(4) Competition: The existence of competition in market is an uncontrollable factor but it affects the marketing. The marketing manager should consider: (i) Consumers attitude, (ii) Competitors strategy, (iii) Effect of demand and supply

(II) Controllable Factors: These are those which are under the social and legal boundaries of the firms and thus under the control of marketing manager. These are:

(1) Product Planning: According to Stanton, “Product planning embraces all activities which enables producers and middlemen to determine what should constitute a company’s line of product.” The main purpose of product planning is satisfaction of consumer with the product. This affects marketing mix.

(2) Brand Policy: Branding means naming a product for its identification and distinction. Brand policy includes decisions regarding selection of a good brand name, formulation of appropriate brand strategy, monitoring brand performance, careful brand positioning and timely introduction of new brands. If a marketer makes any change in brand policy, he will have to change marketing mix also.

(3) Packaging Policy: Packaging is a marketing tool. It helps in demand creation and is remarked as ‘silent salesman’. With the increasing competition, marketers are making use of innovative packing which increases the products value. Changes in packaging requires changes in marketing mix.

(4) Advertisement Policy: It is the most powerful element of a company’s promotion mix. The marketing manager must formulate the advertisement policy taking into account the purpose, area, media of advertisement etc. A change in advertisement policy leads to automatic change in marketing mix.

(5) Physical Distribution Channel: While taking the decision regarding physical distribution channel, the marketing manager has to consider warehousing, transportation, inventory, finance management. While framing physical distribution policy, the marketing manager should see that the product is made available at proper time and place with minimum cost.

(6) Product Life Cycle: Every product has four stages of life cycle: introduction, growth, maturity and decline. At each stage the policies formulated are different. Thus, marketing mix is determined by the stage through which a product is passing.

(7) Marketing Research: According to American Marketing Association, “Marketing research is the systematic gathering, recording and analysing of data about problems relating to marketing of goods and services.” With the help of information collected through marketing research, the marketing manager can prepare marketing mix.

(8) Pricing Policy: Pricing is the policy of determing the price of a product. Pricing decisions have impact on financial objectives of the firm. Price variations affect earnings of a company. Therefore, pricing decisions should be taken carefully. Any change in pricing policy leads to change in marketing mix.

(9) Market Segmentation: According to Stanton, “Market segmentation is the process of dividing the total heterogeneous market for a product into several sub markets each of which tends to be homogeneous in all significants.” Thus a marketer adopts the marketing mix according to his segment.

(10) Personal Selling Policy: Personal selling is another forceful marketing communication process available for promoting profitable sales. The marketing manager has to take decisions regarding recruitment, training and the organisation of salesmen. Changes in decisions regarding above will lead to change in marketing mix.
The study, analysis and evaluation of above factors helps in preparing an ideal marketing mix. However the ratio of different factors and their roles in marketing is influenced by the knowledge, experience and foresightedness of marketing authorities.
